Awareness of news on Japan..what news is fit to print?

March 13, 2011 2 comments

With the news happening in Japan, I have definitely relied more on Twitter to provide me with news of what has been happening. Western media are at the moment, days late. So Japan is currently operating at normal schedule at the moment. However, with the boom of the internet, and social media.. what an elusive rush that being aware of news and the need to talk about it… can probably bring in a Trojian Horse scenario. This phrase usage is in relation to Homer’s story, not the computer scenario.

I have been mostly rt-ing on the basics a basics of being aware of things occurring, in Japan. Commends to Twitter.com to actually still be able to run like this. Still though, statistics are not settled down as of yet, and warnings are still in effect. Tsunami warnings have been lifted.

I spoke with a friend in Japan, and there are several things to be mindful of, dealing with Twitter.

  • Don’t panic.
  • Stop rt-ing old/dated news.. since with the more people, there can be more unnecessary panic.
  • Don’t spread false news, unless it is confirmed by reputable sources.

I have been mostly watching NHK World and Yokoso via UStream, so right now Tokyo is trying to maintain normal lives, and donations can be made through a variety of sources. At this time, America has sent a large ship, and this military operation is called Operation Tomodachi. It is definitely important to be aware, but to also be aware that continually surrounding yourself with this type of news is not a positive experience.

Please don’t call the affected areas, since phone communication is very tied up. If you do need to be aware of a Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami news, consult here, and possibly as a source of seeking information on foreigners living/working in Japan, here.

Announcing March 2011′s Manga Movable Feast and a Call for Contribution

March 9, 2011 6 comments

Manga Movable Feast also known as MMF is a monthly virtual book club of some sorts. Hosted on a different blog, a chosen title, series or work is blogged about in a one week period. The objective of any past present or future feast is to foster community, and promote a feast of discussion, analysis or written feelings from any participant for a chosen work. If you want to check out any of our past feasts, or participate in future feasts, take a look at our mailing list. This is already MMF’s second year, and as a participant I don’t see an end to this feast anytime soon.

These are the last two Feasts that was held recently:

  • February 2011: Barefoot Gen (Hosted by Sam Kusek, A Life in Panels)
  • December 2010: One Piece (Hosted by David Welsh, The Manga Curmudgeon)

For this month, I am quite please to announce March’s chosen title is Aria by Kouzue Amano. I am looking forward to much participation in this feast. This is my first time acting as host, and so Johanna wrote an insightful guide on what it takes to be running and participating in a feast.

The feast will be taking place around the week of March 20 to 26, so please look forward for discussion or submitting links around that time. I will for a week be posting daily roundups of what links were submitted that day.

I realize that MMF is a manga blogging project, but since Aria has made a successful crossover into three Anime seasons, and an OVA. I welcome and invite discussions from Anime bloggers as well. Any posts whether it is a review on the manga or anime series, discussion on characters, setting, effects, dynamics. Just anything you can find to discuss about it, it is welcome. Even if you have written about the series in the past, you can revisit this series, and share any new feelings about it. I certainly will be posting my own entries on topics I find relevant to this series.

If you would like to participate but don’t have a blog to write a piece on, I would happy to host guest pieces during this Feast. If there are any further questions or concerns, just email me at animemiz [at] gmail dot com otherwise you can Tweet me @animemiz.

Now if this is your first time picking up this series, here’s a brief background of the graphic novel. Aria’s genre is science fiction, and the recommended reading age of this series is for older teens. Its publication run in Japan concludes at 12 volumes. Aria has an interesting publication history in North America, so far it has been translated by two companies. ADV, and Tokyopop. This title is still incomplete in English, since there are only six volumes out so far, along with a prequel, known under a different name of Aqua.

Aria has successfully transitioned into having three animation seasons, an OVA and specials. Luckily for American fans, the animation series’s three seasons is licensed by Nozumi, an imprint of RightStuf. So please watch for this space for MMF to be underway.

Fist of Legend, sequel to Donnie Yen’s portrayal.

March 8, 2011 Leave a comment

Before I get into the song aspect, what is the inspiration of this post.. mostly because of the post and trailer that I saw here.

I forgot that Donnie Yen was going to be in a movie sequel of Fist Of Fury… I did see in an interview that he is a sincere fan of Bruce Lee.. just like Stephen Chow is. So here’s several prior initial impressions I have of Fist Of Legend.

  1. I really am not a fan of the period.Give me a contemporary Hong Kong movie piece but definitely post-Manchu Dynasty, and pre-Communist era. I probably won’t see this movie
  2. Action gets really boring.
  3. This is a very nationalistic Chinese message, nothing is wrong with that..just a lot of things I don’t want to think much about.

Fist of Fury is an original movie portrayed by Bruce Lee on Chen Zhen’s struggle for upholding the name of his dojo. This is a movie portrayed by Bruce Li, Jackie Chen and Jet Li, but if you look on the television drama, I can’t help but remember Donnie Yen’s initial potrayal of Chen Zhen in an ATV production. He is actually singing the drama’s theme song. So from what I can gather, Fist of Legend is a sequel of Fist of Fury the ATV television version.

Another random part I think about Fist of Fury is Stephen Chow’s parody of it, in his movie King of Comedy, the Fist of Fury reference comes in around 6:11.
